I just went into my MPD to see how the pattern icon looked and I was offered the ability to buy patterns for a special offer for today...Is this for real, is anyone still using MPD, I thought it was not only closed but not useable. It looks like I am wrong!

AFAIK, MPD is no longer in operation and the MPD app no longer works.

I'm guessing that the reason the app is showing you the offer is because the offer and the date when the offer is valid is programmed into the MPD app and you will see the same offer every year on that date if you open the app.

The Dress Shop app also has that unfortunate feature. The only way to "turn off" the offers is to release a new version of the app that does not have the built-in offers.
